Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) has become a standard staging tool in the surgical management of breast cancer. Though it has evolved over the last few decades, its usage is still limited owing to lack of proper exposure and training, long learning curve, cost of equipment, multi-departmental workup involving nuclear medicine and pathology.
This course aims at basic training on SLNB through virtual video platforms and hands-on training and is led by renowned members.
SLNB course is a 2-month staggered course aimed at training the postgraduates, residents of surgical oncology or general surgery, practising surgeons with a special interest in breast surgical oncology in SLNB procedure in Breast malignancy Cases. It includes a combination of Virtual and hands-on courses the includes 6 virtual lectures, a 2-day observer-ship, and 2-day assisted hands-on under supervision. It includes two different modules that are detailed below. The trainee can opt according to feasibility. Those opting for Module-B have to complete the same within 2 months. This course is designed keeping in view the availability of cases and trainees time restraints.

Observership (2 Days ):

Nuclear Medicine: preoperative Sentinel node Mapping:
- Pre - Operative preparation of Nano- Colloid
- Injection of nano-colloid-technique
- Identification and mapping of Sentinel lymph nodes using Scintiscan
Intra - Operative:
- Technique of injection of Dye (Methylene Blue)
- Pre- Operative Procedural Preparations
- Setting of gamma Probe monitor and handling of Gamma Prob
- Intimation to Patgology team & Filling of Frozen form
- Surface marking of SLN before incision
- Plan of incision based on tutor location, type of Surgery (bcs/MRM)
- Identification of hot & Blue Node and Excision
- Specific cases of interest (Obese/male/Elderly)
- Challenges in a previously operated Breast
Pathology: Frozen Section of Sentinel Node - The Procedure, The Pros And The Cons:
- Preparation of slides
- Examination of slides
- Identification of Micro-metastasis/ITCs
- Examination of slides
- Role of IHC
Assisted hands-On Under Supervision (2 days):
A two-day assisted hands-on where the trainee will be guided with an injection of nano-colloid, dye, plan of incision, assisted SLN identification and excision.
Final Evolution:
- An MCQ based evaluation of the trainees will be carried out at the completion of the course
- A completion certificate will be handed to the student at the end of the course.

- MCh Surgical oncology or equivalent Graduates
- MS/DNB General Surgery or Equivalent Graduates with Oncology as the field of interest.
- Surgical Oncology, MS/DNB Post Graduate residents (Presently Pursuing).
- Fellowship in Breast Surgical oncology
