‘Medical Observership’ and ‘Medical Externship’ are two different types of medical programs based on tools used. These terms are quite different from each other. Medical observership, as the name suggests, relies on observing procedures.

The most common confusion occurs between a medical observership and shadowing. Let’s see what these two terms are and how they differ.
An observership program is solely based on following a certain procedure and learning via observation. The students will only observe the physician by following their day-to-day activities. This is done with proper permissions and without hindering any treatments or breaking privacy policies of patients
involved.

There is no interaction with the patient or actual involvement in any treatment procedures. Only information that is relevant to teaching is involved.
An observership program is available to medical students, or those studying to become health professionals and are related to the field of medicine. These courses cover a wide range of subjects. You can choose to do such a program in the hospital or ambulatory or even ER. This program is recognized as a formal one, with a letter of recommendation or certification being provided to you at the end.

Shadowing a physician is quite similar with biggest difference being that, shadowing is not really formally recognized.
The main aim of an observership program is that health professionals should learn and understand and get a deeper insight of medical procedures and rules, as well as the functioning of a medical instituition.
