International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is observed on the 3rd of December every year. This event aims to promote awareness and a better understanding of disabilities such as sight or hearing impairment, mental illness, brain injuries, learning differences, neurological disorders, and cognitive dysfunctions.
As per WHO’s World Report on Disability, 15% of the world’s total population has some type of disability. This sums up to more than 1 billion people. Studies show that around 450 million people suffer from neurological or medical conditions. A large number of people do not get the professional help that they need mainly due to social stigma and neglect.
With the ongoing pandemic, we have had to maintain social distancing. The isolation and disconnect have impacted people with disabilities all over the world. This is why it is so important to remove all the barriers because of which people with disabilities are not being able to get the help they need.
Importance of IPDwD
People with certain disabilities generally have poorer health and fewer educational opportunities, limiting their job prospects. There is also a lack of awareness in our society about disability. This is why it is so important to get rid of this ignorance in order to get the social support that people with disabilities need.
The main purpose of International Day of People with Disability is to promote the well-being of people who have disabilities. It is also to create awareness about their situation and how they cope with the social, economic, and cultural aspects of their lives. The theme of IDPwD 2020 is ‘Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world’. This theme focuses on how our society can break the technological, physical, and attitudinal barriers to help make the lives of people who have disabilities easier.
